Start with the thing that has a deadline attached to nothing but your own attention. On 26 March 2026 the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced recall 26339: about 10.2 million Nexgrill metal wire bristle grill brushes, "sold in stores at Home Depot and online at homedepot.com from 2015 through 2026 for between about $5 and $15". Six model numbers are affected — 530-0024, 530-0024G, 530-0034, 530-0039, 530-0041 and 530-0042 — printed on the packaging, on brushes 18 to 21 inches long with black plastic or wood handles. The hazard, in CPSC's words, is that bristles "can detach from the brushes and stick to the grill or food, posing an ingestion hazard and risk of serious internal injuries that could require surgery", and Nexgrill reports at least 68 detachment reports including five consumers who swallowed bristles and needed medical treatment to remove them. Eleven years of distribution through one retailer means an enormous number of these are still hanging in garages. Anything else in the store worth a thought?
A few small, cheap items that address real problems, and one thing to be sceptical about. Worth considering: a non-slip mat or adhesive strips for the shower floor, for the same dizziness reason as the grab bars; a nightlight or motion-sensor light for the route to the bathroom, because most falls happen at night and orthostatic drops are worst on first standing; and a small step stool with a handle if reduced strength has made reaching high cupboards awkward. If you have a spare or garage refrigerator that you use for medication, an appliance thermometer belongs in it before anything else does. And if you use a soft-sided cooler for travel, keep the gel pack chilled in the fridge rather than frozen in the freezer, because a freezer-hard pack against a pen can freeze the medicine. The thing to be sceptical about is a smart bathroom scale with body-composition readings. Bioimpedance estimates of body fat and muscle from a household scale are not accurate enough to track lean mass loss, which is the thing that actually matters during rapid weight loss, and watching a noisy number fluctuate daily tends to cause anxiety rather than insight. The 250-pound point load figure describes the structural strength requirement for grab bars and their fasteners in the ADA Standards for Accessible Design; individual products carry their own manufacturer ratings and installation requirements, which take precedence.
